  4. Well for this issue we got a 'brilliant idea' we thought! Why not give some
  5. of  the  most  well-known graphicians in the scene the opportunity to judge
  6. each other, by  telling  their  opinions  about  some  of the pictures that
  7. competed  in  the  Hurricane  Gfx - competition !   So  we  contacted  some
  8. graphicians in hope to get some wise words from them.  Well,  we must admit
  9. that  it didn't turn out the way we had hoped. Mainly because a lot of them
  10. didn't  return  anything at all, even though an extra disk was included for
  11. the stamp in most cases.  Maybe  we didn't give the artists enough time for
  12. answering,  maybe  it  wasn't such a brilliant idea afterall, maybe artists
  13. are very lazy or maybe they just didn't had the time. But some answered and
  14. below you can read the words from R.W.O/Kefrens and TMB Designs/Silents. So
  15. thanx to you two cool guys, Rene & Tore !!  And also thanks to the ones who
  16. answered,  but  couldn't  find  the  time for this project, like Cougar/SNT
  17. (Thanx  Christian !!  Hope  everything  is  going  well  with  you exams!). 
  18. The pictures that are reviewed  are  by  Rookie/Upfront(?),  Slash/Anarchy,
  19. Scuba/X-Trade,  R.W.O/Kefrens,  Sauron/Static Bytes, and  Thanatos/PMC. All
  20. the  pictures  ca n be found on Hurricane's gfx-competition disks, which we
  21. warmly recomand for graphic-entuastic people ! If you haven't got the disks
  22. then check you local swapper or write to Top Secret,  but include disks and
  23. returnstamps.  Anyway we hope that you still  can enjoy this little article
  24. even  though  it  didn't  quite turn out the way we wanted ! Let's give the
  25. words to Rene & Tore...

  27. ³Rookie/Upfront:

  30. ²R.W.O:¹ Well, the  background  seems a little like rushwork.  I  also  think
  31. that  he  had  chosen  too  many  different colors.  If  he had chosen less
  32. colors, and spend more  colors  in  the  same  slight-nuance,  the  picture
  33. would have got better smoothings. All in all a standard picture.

  35. ²TMB Designs:¹ The  main  feature about this picture (in my eyes) is the very
  36. confusing set-up, and the strange combination of colors. - It's hard to see
  37. what is what, but still,  some  parts  of the picture is very nice. I think
  38. the  picture  is  well  completed  with  a  huge! amount of colors, but too
  39. confusing to be a winning picture (Is it copied ? I guess so...).

  41. ³Slash/Anarchy:

  44. ²R.W.O:¹ Another  masterpiece  from  Slash. I really like the details on this
  45. picture.  Ok,  I  must  say,  that  the  head of the lady is a bit strange.
  46. Anyway,   this  is  certainly  not  enough   to   ruin  my  sight  on  this
  47. picture. In fact  I  think  that  this  picture  should  have  been  placed
  48. a bit higher. Great picture Jacob; Keep it on......

  50. ²TMB Designs:¹ Was this picture meant to be a part of a game ? It looks a bit
  51. like that.  Slash has drawn that it is designed by him, and then I guess he
  52. means that he made it up all by himself, with no  use  of 'Boris-books' (Is
  53. this correct ?). You can  very well see some of the typhical (Quality sign)
  54. 'Slash-features' like;  ways of drawing the mountains,e.g,  which  is nice.
  55. Also some of the details  are very well drawn ( The rope around the neck of
  56. the dragon,  the eye of the dragon,...), but it doesn't seem all right. The
  57. whole picture, I mean.  I  think it is something about the colors (Drawn in
  58. b/w scale,  I  think  it  would have gained 'sence of reality'). - There is
  59. also one thing:  Behind  your  icon, Slash, there's the ankh. Did you start
  60. making the picture while being in Kefrens ( And  does  that  mean  that the
  61. picture/parts of the picture is maybe, let's say 1 year old ? ( This  would
  62. explain a lot, I think)) - In my opinion, Slash has made better things than
  63. this...

  65. ³Scuba/X-Trade:

  68. ²R.W.O:¹ The  light-effect on the moutains is incredible.  Also the sky looks
  69. quite  good.  In  fact  I  can  explain  my  sight  on  this  picture  with
  70. one magic word: Brilliant!!!!

  72. ²TMB Designs:¹ A sensitive picture, this . The first time I looked at it, I
  73. almost thought it was digitized.  But  then, when I look at it now, I can't
  74. help wondering why he used that balck color (Or is it a bug in my copy ??).
  75. It's well drawn, but I think it is all too 'flat'.  There  isn't much depht
  76. in it (That's a very hard problem working on the amiga, I think). I haven't
  77. got  very  much more to say about it, it is neat, but it's far from perfect
  78. (But there are veeeery few 'perfect' pictures on amiga !)

  80. ³Thanatos/PMC:

  82. ²R.W.O:¹  This  picture  seems a  little simple. The two orgs are ok, but the 
  83. landscape  is  drawn  in  only  one  color  (hmm...) A funny thing is, that
  84. the  picture  includes  two  prehistoric  orgs,  and  in  the  right  side,
  85. you  can  see  two  jetplanes.  All  in  all  this  picture  is ok, but not
  86. more.

  88. ²TMB Designs:¹ I think  this  picture would have looked a lot better drawn in
  89. interlace, because  then  Thanatos  could've  made a more complete study of
  90. the 'goblins' he've made. Is this a scene from 'lords  of  the  rings' ?  I
  91. think there are some small details that  make the picture lose some of it's
  92. 'originality',  and  that  is e.g. the 'bloody' sword (Too 'cool' I think).
  93. Some of the shadows on the persons are neat , but where's the shadow on the
  94. ground ?  There  are,  in  my opinion, some good stuff in this picture, but
  95. they are a bit mis-used. Also,  I  think that a little more work would have
  96. done good.

  98. ³Sauron/Static Bytes: (ex.Equinox)

  101. ²R.W.O:¹ This picture is too dark.  His smoothing is very cloudy, which makes
  102. the  picture  unclear  and  uninteresting.  His   comp. picture   for   the
  103. Gathering   in   Norway   was   much  better  than  this  one.  Maybe  this 
  104. picture was made in quite a hurry, who knows????

  106. ²TMB Designs:¹ One of my good friends, Dali, also drew this picture some time
  107. (I have a kinda  disklike  to the 'the art of copying pictures', which most
  108. graphicians in the amiga scene seem to enjoy very much, anyway!) I think it
  109. is  pretty brave to draw a multi-colored picture in lo-res 5 Bpl ( I  would
  110. never have dared!), but then, you never get away with it without dithering,
  111. and  I  must say that dithering in lo-res is a very  risky  thing  to do. I
  112. think this is a good picture, but not a very good picture ( If  you look at
  113. the horse-study as  a  seldom drawed object in the amiga-scene, the picture
  114. is  pretty succesful, though). Anyway, if I was to judge the competition, I
  115. would've let this picture win.  In  the  first  place, I would (in afrenzy) 
  116. have  chosen  the  picture  by Scuba, but while re-studying the pictures, I
  117. found this one the most attractive (Strange ?).

  122. ²TMB Designs:¹ In my study of  Sauron's  picture,  I stated that I thought it
  123. was brave to draw a multi-colored picture in lo-res. But it is also hard to
  124. draw a picture in an other format. I am not very happy to this, but I think
  125. that Rene has tried, but failed,  in  making  a  good  picture with lots of
  126. colors ( I  tried  to 'adjust' them, just to modify them against each other
  127. and  it  suddenly  looked  much better, I think). I don't know whether this
  128. picture is a study or if is pure 'imagination' by Rene , but I would guess!
  129. that  at  least  the  dragon  and the woman is copied (Is this correct ?  I 
  130. doubt that the background is copied ,  because  if  i t is,  it is horribly 
  131. copied).  Since I am allowed to explein my honest opinion here (Rene, don't
  132. be mad very mad at me (If you aren't mad at me already ?)),  I'd  say  that
  133. this is a pretty poor  picture, at least! in the set-up. I can say for sure
  134. that I wouldn't have voted for this picture !
